Historical Vessel - Handbuilding I

A project in Handbuilding I, an introductory level course for students to learn the basics of hand building techniques in clay including but not limited to pinching, coiling, and slab building.

Students were first tasked to look at ancient ceramic history to find inspiration on how ancient civilizations both constructed their vessels and ornamented them. Then students were asked to look at a variety of contemporary ceramicists who use the vessel prominently in their work. The students then were asked to synthesize this research to create a vessel of their own with a unique narrative based of their contemporary experiences using coil building techniques and underglaze to decorate and ornament the surface.
